Core Musician Retirement: David Adams, Principal Violin & Concertmaster

In 1987, a young violinist and his cellist wife came to Saint John, not quite knowing what to expect but willing to try to establish their careers with an orchestra that was just in its infancy.  Thirty-five years later, David Adams has retired as concertmaster from that orchestra, now known as Symphony New Brunswick, with the knowledge that his talent and commitment has significantly contributed to establishing the Symphony as a nationally prominent professional regional orchestra.  David and Sonja not only contributed with their professional talent, but both helped the Symphony’s administration through some tough times when the existence of the orchestra was under threat.

With many scholarships and first prizes to his credit, Adams has gained critical acclaim as a soloist, conductor, chamber and orchestral musician. Along with his active performing schedule, Adams teaches privately, performs in school concerts and coaches youth orchestras. David Adams received the New Brunswick Merit Award, the Golden Jubilee and Diamond Jubilee Metal for his contribution to Music in New Brunswick.

Under the auspices of the Symphony, David and Sonja established the Saint John String Quartet which has become one of Saint John’s and New Brunswick’s most admired cultural performing groups and, with the Quartet, they have waved Saint John’s flag in many parts of the world on their many international tours.  For many years, they have taught and inspired hundreds of youngsters in many parts of the Province.

David leaves his Concertmaster’s seat at a time when the Symphony has never been better, with a dynamic young Music Director on the podium and a bright future ahead.  David and Sonja Adams are SNB family and, happily, we are not saying good-bye, just a great big thank you from all of us at Symphony New Brunswick and from your many fans.  We’ll see you soon as you continue to make great music with the orchestra.
