Combining, sculpture, scale models, stop-motion animation, robotics, interactive programming, virtual reality and music, Graeme Patterson’s work plunges us into a world that is as moving as it is playful. The product of a slow and meticulous creative process, his work entices us into an emotionally charged parallel universe inhabited by dreams, games, memory, the natural world and nostalgia. Graeme’s narrative driven focus explores personal, social, and ecopolitical subject matter through a mix of humour, absurdity, and self expression. Over the past 20 years he has produced three nationally touring body of works entitled “Woodrow “, “Secret Citadel”, and “Strange Birds”. Additionally, has also collaborated with several fellow artists and musicians in the production of complex multimedia installations and music videos.
Winner of the 2025 Theodore Prize and a finalist for the 2009, 2014, and 2020 Sobey Art Award, Graeme Patterson was born in Saskatoon and currently lives in Sackville, New Brunswick. He was nominated for a Juno award in 2011 and received the Victor Martyn LynchStaunton award for media arts from the Canada Council for the Arts in 2012. His work has exhibited at museums and galleries internationally including the National Art Gallery of Canada, Musee De Beaux - Arts De Montreal, the Art Gallery of Hamilton, the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, the Galerie de l’UQAM (Montreal, QC), the Mendel Art Gallery (Saskatoon, SK) the Southern Alberta Art Gallery (Lethbridge, AB), the Surrey Art Gallery (Surrey, BC), the Centre Des Arts d’Enghien-Les-Bains (Enghien-les-Bains, France), MASS MoCA (Massachusetts, USA), and Creative Time (NY, USA), Bienal de Arte Têxtil Contemporânea, (Guiameres, Portugal) . He has also screened his animated films at several international festivals including the Toronto International Film Festival and the Reykjavik International Film Festival.
Alliant sculpture, maquettes, animation image par image, robotique, programmation interactive, réalité virtuelle et musique, l’œuvre de Graeme Patterson nous plonge dans un univers aussi émouvant que ludique. Fruit d’un processus créatif lent et méticuleux, son travail nous entraîne dans un univers parallèle chargé d’émotions, peuplé de rêves, de jeux, de souvenirs, de nature et de nostalgie. L’approche narrative de Graeme explore des thèmes personnels, sociaux et écopolitiques à travers un mélange d’humour, d’absurdité et d’expression personnelle. Au cours des vingt dernières années, il a produit trois séries d’œuvres présentées en tournée nationale, intitulées « Woodrow », « Secret Citadel » et « Strange Birds ». Il a également collaboré avec plusieurs artistes et musiciens à la réalisation d’installations multimédias complexes et de clips musicaux.
